The Plough
Tucked away on Leverstock Green Road in Hemel Hempstead, The Plough isn’t just your average British pub-it’s a spot locals keep returning to, and for good reason. This charming restaurant has built a solid reputation for comfort food done right, a stellar drink menu, and a vibe that effortlessly balances relaxed and refined. Whether you’re popping in for a solo lunch or planning a cozy dinner with friends, The Plough delivers an experience that’s warm, welcoming, and consistently satisfying.
Step inside The Plough, and you’ll find a space that feels instantly familiar. It’s the kind of place where the staff remembers your order, the menu feels like home, and the plates are always generous. It's popular for lunch and dinner, but what really sets it apart is how adaptable it is to your mood. Fancy a quick bite? They’ve got you covered with hearty small plates. Want to slow things down with a long dinner and a good bottle of wine? You're in the right place.
One of the standout features is the diverse food offerings. The Signature Fish & Chips is a must-try-it’s crispy, golden, and everything you want from a classic British staple. The Roast Beef is also a fan favorite, especially when paired with their velvety gravy and roasted veg. For those with a sweet tooth, the Apple Crumble and Chocolate Brownie often steal the show. Or if you’re lucky enough to catch the Cheesecake of the Day Sundae, don’t hesitate.
Vegetarian diners aren’t an afterthought here either. The Veggie Wellington and Veg Halloumi Burger bring bold flavors and satisfying textures, proving plant-based options can hold their own. There’s also a rotating selection of healthy options for anyone watching their plate, without sacrificing taste.
Beyond the kitchen, The Plough’s drink menu deserves a spotlight of its own. You’ll find an impressive beer selection, great wine list, and expertly crafted cocktails-ideal for kicking off the weekend or pairing with their late-night menu. Tea lovers and coffee purists will also appreciate the quality here. Whether it's a robust Irish Coffee or a cup of freshly brewed tea with dessert, every sip is done with care.
When it comes to accessibility, The Plough makes a clear effort to be inclusive. There’s a wheelchair-accessible car park, entrance, and seating, which is something not every restaurant in Hemel Hempstead can offer. However, it’s worth noting that there’s no accessible toilet or assistive hearing loop at this time-something to keep in mind depending on your needs.
For those who love dining outdoors, the outdoor seating area is a lovely spot, especially in warmer months. The vibe? Casual but polished. It’s a place you can rock up in jeans and still feel like you’re treating yourself.
The Plough offers a full range of service options to match your schedule. Whether you’re grabbing a takeaway, opting for kerbside pickup, or settling in for a relaxed dine-in experience, the process is smooth. Delivery is also available, making it easy to enjoy your favorite dishes from the comfort of home.
Aside from the food and drinks, what truly earns The Plough a spot in people’s hearts is its consistency. You don’t go in wondering if the burger will be dry or if the wine will disappoint. Favorites like the Sirloin Steak, Chicken Schnitzel, and Mussels deliver time and again. The Bread and Butter Pudding has a bit of a cult following, and the Turkey Dinner? Let’s just say you don’t have to wait until December to indulge in it here.
It’s also a great spot if you’re flying solo. The layout is welcoming enough for individuals to grab a quiet lunch without feeling out of place-something that’s harder to find than it should be. Whether it’s a Sweet Potato side you’re craving or a glass of well-poured wine, the team here makes you feel looked after.
For those exploring the best restaurants in Hemel Hempstead, The Plough easily earns a place at the top of the list. It's more than just a place to eat-it’s a reminder of how comforting, satisfying, and simply enjoyable dining out can be when it’s done right.

Food was fab, all had the Carvery, also had the Lemon Meringue Sunday, delicious. Staff were great, friendly/polite and checking in to make sure our food was good and if we needed anything else.
Visited for lunch today with my son. We were seated and served by an older lady (grandparent age) but I'm afraid I don't know what her name was. She was absolutely lovely from start to finish and she was working so hard with serving, check backs and clearing the whole time we were there. She is an asset to your pub! On top of the great service, the food was lovely as was the setting.
A good spot for lunch - just minutes from the M1 - when driving north. We were initially surprised by how many cars there were in the car park, but the pub turned out to be very busy, even at 1pm on a Saturday. A good menu of British pub classics, inc roast pork belly, and fish & chips, and good puddings too. Clearly very popular with the local community!
Huge thank you to Victor for making our birthday lunch so special today!! We had a range of ages at the table from age 3 to age 93, and Victor was so sweet and lovely in all the right ways to every single guest. He made our birthday girl feel very special, and for that we’re incredibly grateful! Food was fantastic and would highly recommend the Halloumi salad. Lots of parking available and good veggie options. Thank you again!
Amazing afternoon spent celebrating my Mum's Birthday, they accommodated all 14 of us with a lovely long table. There is something for everyone here, the carvery was amazing and those of us who ate from the main menu were all very pleased too. Our waiter was good fun (I wish I'd taken his name). We spent around 4 hours there and weren't rushed at all. This is one of my favourite places, so being able to bring all the family and they love it as much as me was very special. Thank you Team xx
